About the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program

The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program was created in 1980 by action of the General Assembly of the former United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America adopted Peacemaking: The Believers' Calling.
The work of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program is guided by three affirmations outlined in Peacemaking: The Believers' Calling:
- The church is faithful to Jesus Christ when it is engaged in peacemaking.
- The church is obedient to Jesus Christ when it nurtures and equips God's people as peacemakers.
- The church bears witness to Christ when it nurtures the moral life of the nation for the sake of peace in the world.
Southminster became part of the PCUSA Peacemaking efforts in the late 80’s. Annually, a Peacemaking offering is collected on World Communion Sunday (first Sunday in October). This offering is divided between PCUSA/Peacemaking, Synod, Presbytery and our church.
Southminster uses their share of the offering to offset the cost of Fair Trade Coffee served the congregation after church and on Wednesday nights. We also sponsor WEDNESDAY NIGHT MOVIES during the summer. Be sure to check out the list on this web site.
A “Peacemaking Class” meets during the Sunday school hour. We have been meeting for two years in the Southard classroom. Our studies are Biblically based and on current topics. We will finish this year studying “Peacemaking & the ‘Powers’ Promoting Justice & Peace in Post-9/11 America.” Please join us at 9:15 as we look at ways to promote peace, justice, and social fairness.
Also check out the peacemaking bulletin board in the hall across from the Pre-School Room. Timely topics are displayed.
